A “guardian” is someone who is chosen or appointed to make legal decisions for someone who is not able to make those decisions on their own. Guardianship is often over a child or an individual who has become incapacitated through age or disability.
Adoption refers to the act by which an adult formally becomes the guardian of a child and incurs the rights and responsibilities of a parent. Relinquishing the rights and responsibilities of the biological parents, and granting full responsibility of the child to the new caregiver.
