Social Security Disability

Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) provides monthly income for people who are 65 or older, blind or disabled and who have very limited income. Children with disabilities may also qualify for SSI if their families have limited income and assets.  Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI or SSD) provides monthly income to workers who become disabled and to certain family members.

The definition of disability for Social Security purposes means that an adult is not able to engage in “substantial gainful activity” (SGA) because of a physical or mental impairment, that was determined medically, which has lasted or is expected to last for at least 12 months, or is expected to result in death.

A child is considered disabled for SSI purposes if he or she has a medically determinable physical or mental impairment (or combination of impairments); and the impairment(s) results in marked and severe functional limitations; and the impairment(s) has lasted (or is expected to last) for at least one year or to result in death.
